Should You Stick Around Post-Sale?

Do you even want to stick around after you exit as the owner?

Some people do — and they have their reasons. Others prefer to run for the hills the moment the transaction closes.

That’s perfectly fine, but it should influence your exit strategy and determine the type of exit you pursue.

Just remember, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

If you’re completely detached from your business and it operates smoothly without you, you might manage with a shorter transition period, depending on the buyer.

But be realistic. When considering acquisition opportunities, potential buyers often don’t want to become owner-operators.

It’s also worth noting that some owners are willing to work with new owners for a couple of years.

Why? Because this collaboration can revitalise the business and, if structured properly, lead to an even better financial outcome.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on your personal preferences and the path you choose before your exit.
