Is It Time to Rethink The 2 Pizza Rule?

Is Jeff Bezos’ “2 pizza rule” for small, collaborative teams already outdated?

You likely know his rule — teams should be small enough to feed with 2 pizzas.

The thinking was — the smaller the team, the better the collaboration.

But sustaining collaboration remotely can be hard work. How do you bring the spirit of the 2 pizza rule to virtual, hybrid teams?

Overcommunicate → Without face-to-face contact, it’s harder to gauge engagement and understanding. Share and listen more. Proactively seek feedback.

Socialise together → Harder when globally dispersed. But connecting at a human level builds social capital and deeper collaboration.

Encourage non-conformity → Online, you often see artificial consensus from worried disagreements could seem rude or hostile. Healthy, contrarian thinking creates an expectation that views will be challenged to get the best outcome.

What else would you add to promoting team collaboration remotely?
