Can Fractional Hires Grow Your Business?
On paper, it seems like a great idea…
Accessing top-level talent on a fractional basis without the hefty full-time cost.
I’m all for it → when it actually works.
But recently, I’ve encountered two companies where fractional hires have become significant bottlenecks to growth.
One founder shared that he felt there was a lack of focus and “buy-in” from one of his fractional hires. Key tasks were being delayed, and the overall pace was too slow.
It’s true — some fractional hires spread themselves too thin, making it hard for them to fully commit to any one business. But that’s part of the deal. By nature, fractional talent divides their time and energy across multiple companies.
So, you either hire a full-time employee for more focus or set clear expectations about what you’re getting with fractional hires upfront.
In the end, it all boils down to delivering results and ROI. And there’s nothing like having skin in the game — whether it’s performance bonuses or equity — to keep top talent fully invested in your business.
